Given SyFy’s recent slant towards cheaply made reality TV shows, it’s no surprise that they would jump on the video clip bandwagon and produce their own show a la Tosh.0 and Talk Soup. What did surprise me was that Will Wheaton’s name was attached to it.
So between SyFy’s reputation for going cheap and Wil Wheaton’s reputation for generally doing good projects…I was torn. Really torn. What else could we do but watch it anyway…FOR SCIENCE!
I should have kept faith that Wil Wheaton wouldn’t attach his name or, you know, himself, to a project that wasn’t any good. I tip my hat to you good Sir. The Wil Wheaton Project may just be my new favorite show! You know, if I would have just read his blog I wouldn’t have had to worry.
Granted, it follows a formula similar to other clip shows with Wil standing in front of a green screen and, what I assume is a live studio audience, introducing various clips supplemented with witty comments. Where it differs is in the content, humor, and intelligence. This show isn’t dumbed down. I repeat. This show is NOT DUMBED DOWN. And this is where it excels. Truly excels. By assuming your audience is highly intelligent you’re playing right into the hearts of the geek community. Finally, a show filled with our memes, quotes, shows, and humor!
I could sit here and continue to tell you how awesome this show is, but nothing I say could accurately describe it. Wil Wheaton had us laughing and quoting him long after the show was over. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.
