I didn’t know about The Sarah Jane Adventures until it’s run was over, but when I tracked it down I found it very enjoyable. Sarah Jane Smith was always a favorite companion from Doctor Who, and it made perfect sense that she would pick up where the Doctor left her – defending Earth using the knowledge she gained while traveling with him, and her tenacious reporting skills. Combine Sarah Jane with her own set of companions, a style that hearkened back to the early days of Doctor Who, and a kid friendly PBS format, and you had a series that anyone of any age could enjoy.
I particularly loved when Doctor Who was referenced directly, and there was no episode finer for that than ‘Death of the Doctor’. It sounds like a New Series title, doesn’t it? The level of gravitas it held in The Sarah Jane Adventures would be comparable to The ‘Day of The Doctor’s importance in the New Series. Not only does the Doctor put in an appearance, but Sarah Jane finally meets her predecessor, Joe Grant. Enter Katy Manning, and Finn Jones, guest at ChicagoTARDIS. We spent nearly half an hour watching Part One and enjoying their live commentary on the episode, including stories about working with the late Elizabeth Sladen. This was a once in a life time opportunity that I was not about to miss. I hope you will be able to enjoy and appreciate it as much as I did.
