You may remember Mimi Imfurst from RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Mimi is no stranger to the stage, nor is she a stranger to pulling through tough times. Her first full-length album, The Fire, pays homage to the struggles which molded her into the strong person she is today. More importantly, it serves as a beacon of hope for anyone currently dealing with rough situations. The message is one that things will get better. You will break through, and you will be stronger than ever before.
The song [The Fire] is for anyone who has ever been through hell and back,” explains Mimi Imfurst. “I decided to name the album after fire because it is a transformative element. It can burn you or it can harden you. It’s a test of the soul.”
Mimi saying she has been through hell and back is an understatement. She’s survived being kicked out of her home as a teenager after being assaulted by a school employee and being out-ed as gay to her family. She’s survived being homeless, not knowing when the next meal would be or where to sleep. Not only experiencing such emotionally and physically wrenching nightmares, but thriving in spite of them, is sadly something much of the LGBTQ community can relate to. Rather than dwell on her past, Mimi has chosen to use it as a platform to lift up others and provide comfort and support. The Fire is intended to inspire listeners to stay strong, stand up, fight, and shine brightly when the universe tries to run you over.
No one can see you shine in the dark,” says Mimi.
