Dragon Con 2016 Preview

This year is the 30th anniversary of DragonCon, and you can believe it’s going to be a party to remember!

The TARDIS is back with two passengers. Last year saw Karen Gillan’s first appearance at Dragon Con, and only the most dedicated fans made it into her packed panels. This year Arthur Darvill will be coming to give us his perspective of the show. Then just when you thought Whovians couldn’t get any more excited, his Time Lord daughter is coming too! Alex Kingston will no doubt be asked about the next season of Doctor Who. Will she give us some hints or will she quote River Song? “Spoilers!”

There’s a new sci-fi show in town, and it’s laying down the law. Or is it running from the law? I always get those two confused, and so do they! Stargate producers and writers Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie are in their second season as the creators of Dark Matter on the SyFy channel. While they are unable to join us, cast members Roger Cross, Anthony Lemke, Jodelle Ferland, and Melissa O’Neil will be coming to Dragon Con. Lets hope the Galactic Authorities don’t catch up with them before the weekend is over!

Harry Potter fans should prepare their best jinxes because the most slippery of Death Eaters is making an appearance. Jason Isaacs is an amazing actor with several BAFTA nominations under his belt. His portrayal of Lucius Malfoy has won him a great deal of recognition in the US. He will be coming to Dragon Con fresh from filming the action-adventure event series DIG for USA Network.

If you have an interest in puppetry, you are no stranger to the name Brian Henson. The son of Jim Henson, Brian grew up to be an award winning puppeteer and innovator in his own right. He is the creator of the groundbreaking show Farscape and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop,  both which starred another Dragon Con guest, Gigi Edgley. Brian Henson’s visit to Dragon Con coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Henson Company, and the 30th anniversary of the legendary film Labyrinth. In fact, there is a sold out Labyrinth celebration being held at the Center for Puppetry Arts.

While Alan Tudyk may be best recognized for his role as Wash on Firefly, his skills as an actor have led to a litany of roles longer than my arm. From live action guest roles to voice acting for animation series, you’ll stumble across his name in credits all the time. Not only will Firefly fans flock to greet him, but so will countless others. Alan’s latest projects include the Con Man game which directly relates to his web series, Con Man. You can also hear his voice in Disney’s new princess movie, Moana and the new Star Wars movie, Rogue One, coming out this winter.

If Jack O’Neill knew who was coming to Atlanta he would probably say, “There goes the neighborhood!” Never before have the Goa’uld guests outnumbered SGC members at the Stargate party, so con goers beware! While they are not known to collaborate with each other, Peter Williams, Suanne Braun, and Jacqueline Samuda may form an alliance and take over the con . . . and then the galaxy!

These are just a few of the approximately 400 guests attending this year’s 30th anniversary convention. Click here to see the full list of featured guests!

There’s a new and very exiting feature this year. Dragon Con members can purchase a streaming membership. This will allow convention goers to stream live events during the convention, like the Friday Night Costume Contest and the Masquerade. It will also give them access to rebroadcasts of main programming panels, news updates from the convention, and a selection of fan-produced content from DragonConTV. In other words, if you missed a big panel because the room filled up, don’t worry! You can stream it and see what you missed when you get home for up to three months!

Want to get a taste of what you’ve been missing for the last 30 years? Here’s your chance! In addition to everything going on in Atlanta, there are new features for fans who can’t make it to the con. The annual Dragon Con Parade will be televised on The CW Atlanta (Channel 69, WUPA).

The SpaceGypsies have been covering Dragon Con since 2010 and we are proud to be doing so again! Make sure you are following us on Twitter @SpaceGypsies.com and myself @PlayItGrand for live-from-the-con news and pictures. We can’t wait to see you there!
