The answer is simple, William Shatner!
For the past 20 years Mr. Shatner has spearheaded the annual Priceline.com Hollywood Charity Horse Show to raise money for numerous causes benefiting children around the world. The Priceline.com Hollywood Charity Horse Show or HCHS, sponsored by Wells Fargo is a huge event that takes place on one Saturday evening each spring. It was Mr. Shatner’s big heart that started this world-class event:
It was back in the late 1980s that Shatner first watched an exhibition by children who were so severely handicapped that some of them could not hold their head up, yet there they were going through intricate exercises on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children. When the exhibition was over, Shatner sat, deeply affected by what he had seen. “You can’t watch these kids without knowing you have to help, somehow.” And so, in March of 1990 came the birth of the first Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Soon, other charities in need of help were added, small, grass root charities doing big time jobs. (horseshow.org)
The show begins with the top reining horses and riders in the world competing in breathtaking slides, spins and maneuvers for top honors in their respective classes. When the sun sets the highly anticipated auction and music show begins to kick off an array of food and fun. Musical guests have included groups like Brad Paisley, Ben Folds, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Randy Travis. This year’s musical guest is none other than Sheryl Crow.
There are currently 26 charities supported by the HCHS including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which is internationally recognized for it’s pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases; Horses4Heroes, Inc., is building a nationwide network of family-friendly horseback riding facilities that support their mission to make horseback riding affordable for, and accessible to the families of the heroes in our communities; PAWS/LA, which provides services to assist low-income seniors and people disabled by a life-threatening illness in keeping and caring for their pets; and Reins Therapeutic Horsemanship Program which provides physical and emotional therapy to a wide range of disabled children and adults through the use of carefully supervised horseback riding with mental, physical and emotional benefits.
