Warner Brothers’ V: Past, Present and Future

Hello everyone;

I’m Vala. I am a huge fan of all incarnations of V, I have adored the show since I was four years old, when I first saw the original V back in the late 1980’s, which I guess is a good thing as I am going to cover V for SpaceGypsies!

I own and run a successful (2009-2011) V RPG with Kimmy co-owner, Angie co-admin and Rose global Mod. We recently had to make a new forum as there were some issues with the older style Proboards. We have a great team of role-players, who are playing either the canon (real characters from the show) or their own created Characters. RPG (Role playing game) is a great form of creative writing, and often an escape from the hardships of reality! Feel free to join and play or you can join to read our show! If you would like to join please make sure to read the rules thread! Or if you have any questions feel free to email the team on: v.we.are.of.peace.always.rpg@gmail.comthank you! 🙂

I’ll start with a brief overview/comparison of the reimagining of the amazing 1980’s smash hit V, which is now a
Warnerbrothers production aired on ABC. The original “V” miniseries was created by the legend Kenneth Johnston. The original V had Earth in the 1980’s shocked when Visitors in Fifty huge space ships appeared all over the planet, claiming to have come in peace. When they made the first contact they looked Human, but had strange reverberating voices. As the show went on Mike Donavan (Marc Singer) a news Camera man discovered that the Visitor’s were hiding a massive secret, they were reptilian under their fake skin. After sneaking aboard the Los Angles Mothership (Where this V was based) he filmed Diana (Head Scientist) and Stephen (head of Visitor security) eating live animals. This is the iconic scene where Jane Badler who amazingly portrayed Diana-ate the guinea pig).  Mike then discovers that the Visitor’s are after more… our water and us… as food! He joins forces with a band of rebels/resistance fighters lead by a medical student Julie Parish, together through V parts one and two and the Final Battle parts one, two and three manage to save earth. There was V the series that aired one season in the late 1980’s but it was not as amazing as its predecessors. But still worth a watch! I of course own them all on DVD.

The new incarnation of V has some of the elements from the original show, but with some new plot twists to bring it into the twenty-first century! When Anna (Morena Baccarin) and her gang show up and claim to be of peace; always and only want to better mankind,  )  FBI special Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), the new version of Mike Donavan,  quickly uncovers that the Visitors are reptilian and have been here infiltrating for decades.  I loved this plot line, it makes perfect sense!

Anna openly asks for water, but doesn’t tell us that she is in fact ‘Queen’ of her people. Well she overthrew her Mother, Diana, who is played by the Legendary Jane Badler who was of course the original Diana. Though I should point out here that in the 1980’s V Diana was not the Queen or ‘Leader’ she was a scientist initially who took over command of the fleet around Earth when she killed Pamela. Anna had pretended her Mother was dead, and took on leadership, controlling her people with what they call ‘Bliss’ it is like a form of mind control, but also like a drug, they ‘need’ it, and my theory is that the giver of Bliss gets as much out of it as the receivers!
Also starring in the new incarnation of V is:
Scott Wolf as Chad Decker and Chris Shyer as Marcus.

In both incarnations of V we had Hybrids. In The 1980’s The Final Battle Parts Two and Three we were introduced to (Human) Robin’s Hybrid twins. One was more Visitor and later dies. This of course is how the Resistance defeat the Visitors, using the bacteria that killed the twin to create an airborne virus “Toxin” that would kill visitors. The first born, a girl named Elizabeth, looks Human but later develops many special abilities. She sheds her skin and grows quickly, which of course so did Amy Hybrid. Though this was through genetic manipulation as Anna wanted her Back up Queen Egg grown to full maturity quickly so they experimented on the ‘expendable’ Hybrid Ryan and Valarie’s Daughter. But unlike Elizabeth; Amy won’t be saving mankind, she will ultimately be their undoing as she can perform bliss on Humans. I wasn’t overly happy about that twist as it was always lead to believe that only “Royal females” could use Bliss so why does a Hybrid of no special lineage have this ability? And would Anna really tolerate someone who is potentially more powerful than her? I’m sure the answer is “No!”

The finale of V was fast paced but as the episodes were cut back from thirteen to ten it felt like they had to bring a (potentially) three episode arc into one, I must commend the writers and team, they did an amazing job! It was a rollercoaster and set up a great new season…

Unfortunately ABC confirmed on Friday the Thirteenth (of all days) May 2011 that they have cancelled V. It is not unexpected, as it seems ABC didn’t take the show seriously, taking risks with storylines. IE: ‘The Destroying of the Soul’ arc. And they had such a wonderful opportunity with the amazing Jane Badler but they had her locked in a cell with nothing but having her egotistical daughter torment her.

*In the Role Play we were never comfortable to play this out, so in our version Anna has her Mother look into interbreeding Visitors with Humans, presenting Diana with her (Created Character)  Hybrid Granddaughter to experiment on/with*

Now as you know us Veeks (V Geeks as we are proud to be called) will not sit back and take defeat.  I urge everyone to support: Project Alice via Face Book and Twitter. Friend Ilana Rapp on Face Book and Twitter, she is our fearless leader! 🙂
Ilana was wonderful enough to devote some of her precious time to answer some questions, explaining how we can help V to be reinstated on the TNT network.

From Samm: What drew you as a fan to V and why do you love it so much?
ILANA – I actually saw V: The Final Battle first, in 1984.  My dad came home from work almost every day saying how everyone at work is talking about this “V” and we *have* to watch it.  Back then, we only had one TV, so my little brother and I plopped down with Dad to watch it.  It was so incredible — I knew at that moment “V” would be a lifelong love of mine.

The story, the action and the special effects are what drew me to “V.”  And the soundtrack was incredible!  Then NBC re-ran V: The Original and that was also amazing, again with everything I’d always dreamed of wrapped up into one mini-series!!!

Vala: For V fans who are not familiar with Project Alice and your ongoing effort to reinstate our favourite Television Program, could you give us a brief overview of the premise of Project Alice.
ILANA – The premise of http://www.facebook.com/ProjectAliceV is to bring “V” back, no matter which network it’s on.  Or a TV movie…or a movie…anything to give us closure!

I have been fighting for “V” to come back since it went off the air in 1985. You can imagine how much I’ve learned over the years regarding the TV industry, fan networking, etc.  I created Project Alice as a play on words with Project Ares, the Resistance’s code name in the last episode of 2010’s “V.”  Also, the name “Alice” means “Truth” which is exactly what the humans are searching for.

Project Alice has an in-place team of administrators from all different time zones so we can have 24 hour coverage.  Everyone was hand-picked based on different skills and I am very proud of our team!

Tess The Traitor: where the best fit for V would be, and why it deserves a second chance?
ILANA – Actually, it would be “V’s” *third* chance.  The second chance is when ABC picked it up.  “V,” created by genius Kenneth Johnson, has the most incredible amount of everything needed to make an entertaining story:  drama,  emotional connections, terror/fear, special effects, futuristic things…

As of this interview, the best fit for “V” would be on TNT.  This conclusion was drawn after much research by one of my other team members.  Once he presented me with all the facts, which I tried to dis-prove for argument’s sake, it was obvious TNT was the direction to follow.  If TNT doesn’t pick “V” up, there’s a 2nd and 3rd backup plan.

On a completely different level, I would also be overjoyed to see Kenneth Johnson’s “V” movie greenlit.  Afterall, if it wasn’t for Ken… !!!

Vala: I have many V fans contacting me asking what they can do to help, I always redirect them to your Face Book page, what is the current plan for saving V? And what can we do as a fandom to help your efforts?
ILANA – Thank you for continuing our effort to save “V!”  Right now the best thing to do is send snail mail letters to the two Warner Brothers executives, Peter Roth and Bruce Rosenblum, and TNT executive Michael Wright.  We have pre-written letters on the Project Alice website OR you can write your own.  The reason we chose snail mail is it makes a bigger impact — it’s something the executives and their assistants can HOLD in their hands.  Not just an email that can accidentally be deleted.

Samantha Ryder asks: Is there anything you think could have been done better within the show that would have made it renewable by abc?
ILANA – In between seasons there was a shake-up with the Programming Heads.  Paul Lee was brought in to take over.  I noticed since then, the marketing for “V” was trimmed down to basically nothing.  In the first season, we had billboards plastered all over the United States.  “V” was advertised in Times Square NYC — very expensive!  There were also lots of commercials, online and magazine ads keeping “V” in everyone’s mind.  In the second season, we basically had no advertising.  Viewers are known to have a very limited memory when it comes to TV.  If it’s not in front of their face, they move on to something that is.  While the ratings stayed steady the entire second season, the ratings weren’t high enough to make ABC continue our show.

Vala: Is there anything else that can be done by V fans to help get our favourite show back in production?

ILANA – Yes!  Continue your support!  The fans are so incredible!  It’s important not to make personal calls or emails to the executives, but to keep it to snail mail letter writing.  We must remain UNITED and let Warner Brothers and TNT know you are part of Project Alice.  Also, the online support has been tremendous!  As long as we continue to make people aware of Project Alice, we have a fighting chance!

Thank you, Ilana

Thank you so much again Ilana!
I really hope (and as you know pledge myself to the cause) TNT will renew V, and bring the show to air again, with full seasons!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to read my article, if you have any comments or feedback please feel free to comment here or via Twitteror FaceBook

I had been a fan of Project Alice for a few days after Derek recommended them to me. I had not said anything on any post or wall (as I had nothing to add but my quiet support). When Derek got banned, I wrote a comment that noted that the admins had been banning folks. I was subsequently banned without warning.

The same day, the admins posted that they’re ‘of peace’ and do not want any negative comments, and anyone who posts criticism will be warned, then banned. I received no warning, just a ban. The admins have since removed their wall post suggesting that they’ll warn people before banning.

It’s vexing to me to watch a great cause be manhandled with a heavy fist and any comment that isn’t purely praise or news updates is treated as ‘negative’ and ban-worthy. I’d love to know how many people are on their Banned list on FB. I’m an admin of a FB page that has over 100,000 followers and we’ve only banned 5 people total (for spamming links). I don’t feel comfortable recommending people to this good cause run by folks who do clearly care, yet some portion of the admin team feels that it is appropriate to treat people callously when unity and peace IS needed. I’m sure it’s not everyone, so for those you do know personally, thank them for their efforts, as I can’t (banned) – I know how hard it is to fight for a tough challenge like this and to keep people engaged.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Derek Ross,
But I know several of the admins of Project Alice on a personal level and I know that this is not how they work.

V is loved by so many young and old alike, and at this moment of time Project Alice alone has 10,882 likes so that is testament that what they do is working and liked by everyone! PA has support of several ‘V’ people.
I have faith in what they do, and wholeheartedly one hundred percent support their continuing efforts.
Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments!

We need to unite to bring back this amazing show!

We are of Peace, we are always of Peace!

Ive been a member of Project Alice from the start, and a long time V fan and member of the V page on FB. Project Alice’s admins work tirelessly every single day, day in and out trying to get this show back on the air and keep everybody focused and upbeat about reaching that goal. Applause to Ilana Rapp and Team Project Alice on the hard work and making that page a great place for real honest V fans to support the show we love.

I am a big fan of ‘V’, and was upset, though not shocked, when they announced non-renewal. It was recently that I found the Project Alice facebook fan page and when I did I knew I wanted to see where it was going and try to help. However in the day leading up to the uStream livecast that was made and making good on a promise of a dance for reaching 10K posts, I politely asked that they stop the massive use of all caps and to reconsider their choice to spam their users page with the same post 6 times in the same day. I did mention that if they did not I was going to have to hide their notifications. Their response? a ban. I got into the ustream and asked them why I was banned, I was answered with the statement that it was probably facebooks fault and it was just a display error causing my post not to appear. Im sorry but Im quite familiar with the way fan pages work, and I know that I was banned (I even reliked the page temporarily to see if I could post, I couldnt – thus proof of being banned)

Granted I have been a little bit trollish since in trying to get them to answer why they banned me and then why the lie! I really believe that the admins of this site should reconsider their position of 0 tolerance to disagreement. As people voicing concerns and different ideas can really improve a pages ability to grow, develop and come up with more and better options for accomplishing the actual goal.

I have come to the conclusion at this point the “Project Alice” admins are unwilling or unable to take criticism, even when politely worded. This is going to be a problem in the future especially as we know now (with Morena Baccarins new job) that season 3 if ever resurrected will not be this year. The admins need to be ready for the long haul, and this will require more than a “my way or the highway” approach, which is the way it is being run right now.

Great post! Yet another wonderful show canceled. Glad to have you on the “Save V” team. b

I support project Alice! Thank you Vala for supporting too, and thank you Ilana!

Tell Munchy her picture is awesome!!!! I love how V is a show that can be enjoyed by fans of all ages.

Jane Badler is a terrific talent. I was quite excited to see her return to V, but a little disappointed to not see more of her. Perhaps TNT will take note of our RPG and will bring Jane back for a similar role in season 3. Anything is possible right?

    Great job Vala!

V is of course one of the top sci fi shows of all time (I include both the original and the reimagining in this opinion). I agree wholeheartedly with your assessments of what went wrong and right with the new V, and I enjoyed your recapping of the original since it has been a while since I have seen it.

Thank You and thank Ilana for continuing the fight for V and letting all us Veeks out there know that there is hope for our show to come back!!!!

And in the meantime we do have our wonderful RPG, which of course would not exist without Kenneth Johnson. V is a beautiful circle! *giggles*
