“One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging — they get hurt and sick — but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.
With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking “What is Torchwood?”, he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.”

Torchwood is back, and contrary to prior rumors it is not a reboot of the series, but a continuation of the original. Russell T. Davies, series creator and executive producer, states in an interview, “It’s very much the next step. It’s not a new version, it’s not a reboot. We’re simply moving countries.”
Most of the new season will be shot in Los Angles, CA. In addition, rather than following the monster of the week format of the first two seasons, Torchwood: Miracle Day will follow the miniseries format like Torchwood: Children of Earth. It will be one story divided into 10 episodes. In addition, the show will be a three way coproduction between BBC Wale, BBC Worldwide, and the U.S. television network Starz. The coproduction with Starz opens up more than a few doors, including a bigger budget. The writing will still be done by the original writers- and a few new American writers- while Starz will provide additional financial support.
With most of the stories characters killed off by the end of Children of Earth, who will be coming back? John Barrowman (Capt. Jack Harkness), and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), have been confirmed to be returning. Kai Owen (Rhys Williams), Tom Price (PC Andy), and William Thomas and Sharon Morgan ( Geraint and Mary Cooper- Gwen’s parents) will also be returning to the show. Torchwood: Miracle Day will also play host to some new characters. CIA agent Rex Matheson- played by Mekhi Phifer- appears to be the viewer’s window into the Torchwood world- much how Gwen was when Torchwood first aired. CIA Watch Analyst Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins) and surgeon Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur) will also join the cast. Finally, the catalyst for Miracle Day’s plot, Oswald Danes, will be played by Bill Pullman. Danes is a convicted murderer who faces death by lethal injection and is the first to not die when said injection fails.
Torchwood: Miracle Day is set to air July 8th at 10pm on Starz Network.
