Huge Success for Firefly's Gina Torres

Samm July 8, 2010 2 Comments »

Firefly’s Gina Torres stars in ABC Family’s new summer smash Huge, based on the book of the same title by Sasha Paley. The show follows a group of seven teenagers through their summer at weight-loss camp. Torres stars as Dorothy Rand, the sympathetic head counselor of Camp Victory.

Amid teenage drama, angst, summer crushes, and body issues, Torres delivers a subtly powerful and memorable performance as a woman desperately trying to form a relationship with her distant father.

Huge also stars Hairspray’s Nikki Blonsky as Willimina “Will,” a camper and rebel who refuses to conform. Behind her rebellion is a strong message: love your body, no matter what shape it is.

The story tackles the numerous tough issues that go along with self and body image. The messages are subtle but they’re still there. It will be interesting to see how deeply Huge will delve into just how much teens are pressured to be perfect.

Huge airs on ABC Family Mondays at 9/8 Central.

Y’know, I really thought I would hate this show. I was prepared to write a post saying “for shame, Gina Torres, FOR SHAME!” Because of my own history, I have a really hard time with fat-shaming, and the poster, the title of the show, really turned me off, even though I know what the message is supposed to be: humanizing fat people, encouraging self esteem, etc. I missed the pilot but caught the second episode on Hulu and it was really, really powerful. It captured the pressures of being a fat teenager so completely and intensely that I was shocked.

It was hard to watch in some ways, and very uncomfortable because of the truths within. Because even with the positive message, the negativity and stereotypes are still addressed, and it’s damn painful, but in a very cathartic way. It’s hard to explain. Plus, the show deals with more than just weight issues.

In particular, the girl who was coddled by her helicopter parents in Episode Two really touched me. I’ve known and taught girls like her, who are so incapable of surviving without their parents that they don’t just have trouble in the real world; they crumble.

It also touches on weight issues that guys face. While there are many gorgeous girls on the show, the word I was going to choose for the men was “adorable”. Then again, I don’t think the men on the show are going for “sexy”, though I just love Ari Stidman, who plays Ian (I do have a weakness for cuddly Jewish teddybear types.)

I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this one. Gina is fantastic as well, with the
same quiet intensity we know and love her for, but Blonsky and Stidman really shine.
