I’d like to write, well actually, rant about something I read about using one space instead of two after a period. AND I’d like to holler out a little rant to those that jump right on that ‘UGLY’ bandwagon.
Yep, that’s it, that’s what I want to rant about.
First I need to be sure everyone understands that I’m a proponent of free speech, let your geek flag fly, and say what you mean and mean what you say.
In no way am I inferring anyone should NOT post their opinion anytime, anyway, anyhow.
You see, Farhad Majoo, wrote on the site, that there should only be only one space after a period.
Here’s a quote from that article:
And yet people who use two spaces are everywhere, their ugly error crossing every social boundary of class, education, and taste. You’d expect, for instance, that anyone savvy enough to read would know the proper rules of typing, but you’d be wrong; every third e-mail I get from readers includes the two-space error.
Whoa there Mr Magoo… I’m long past 50 years old and not having gotten that memo imagine my shock and awe when I discovered this via a tweet pointing to that bit of preachy rambling. Obviously (and gratefully) I don’t read Slate.
Ugly? He said using two spaces after a period is UGLY!? Maybe Mr. Magoo/Majoo needs a thesaurus?
Would have been better choices for that ugly word…ugly.
So, after reading the article and fleeing the country to avoid prosecution I canvassed some 30, 40, 50 and 60 year old acquaintances who have been writing and blogging for a while. None had ever heard of this. They, as well as I, were unaware of this unspeakable – or perhaps un-typable – crime we were committing. Or at least criminal in the eyes of the internet savvy youngsters. Those darn young whippersnappers!
The whole thing has to do with spaces on the typewriter vs spaces on a computer or, if you will, ‘modern’ fonts.
In the words of my dearly departed father and one Jack O’Neill… For cryin’ out loud!
My thumb is like a Gatling gun on the space bar! It will make spaces with a mind of its own!
I’ve never even noticed an ugly space issue in any postings, mine or anyone else – and I went back through some random writings to see if it indeed was ugly… nope.
Look… I can see the value of one-spacing, but after 40 plus years of typing two it’s a bit difficult to stop, not to mention killing the story in my head that my brain is spewing out of my rapidly typing fingertips followed by that wild space creating right thumb of mine.
And I have to ask…How does one come up with ‘UGLY’ from a spacing issue?
What I find ugly are the ones who jumped right on that bandwagon..without a second thought… some of which are self proclaimed writers – which makes me wonder if they only want to show any and all just how clever, educated, technically savvy and at their computer/smartphone/ipad ever ready to criticize any and all on social networks for the glory of being the first to do so. Ah… the kindness of strangers! Don’t cha just love those darn internets?
Can we just have some positive feed back? Must it always be so tainted with: ‘See! See! you are wrong, therefore I am so much smarter than you….’
That gets so frelling annoying.
There is another article on this subject by the way– from Heracliteanriver.com titled “Why two spaces after a period isn’t wrong (or, the lies typographers tell about history).
You can find the article by clicking right here.
So, you writers out there, keep writing creatively. Space one or two spaces as you see fit. Don’t criticize others – be courteous send out all the PMs/DMs you want to and point out errors you found, help other writers with some suggestions. Don’t over-focus on the RIGHT way to write as found on the internet or from some pompous arrogant professor… focus on the creation, the story you want to tell… then get yourself a really awesome Editor! (unless of course you are one of the fortunate ones who can self edit quit nicely, thank you very much).
Oh and by the way, I know my skills are minimal, and my education was short lived, so I will continue to write and my thumb will never let me stop with the two spaces after the period. Nope, not gonna happen.
