“So a Pirate, a Chef, and a Saiyan Walk into a Bar…”(Dream 9 Collaboration Special Review Part One)June 20, 2013 No Comments »
Greetings fellow riders of the fan-caravan!
It’s not entirely unheard of for my projects to branch out and spawn other projects like an out of control amoeba (or some strange idea-ivy…or a fangirl fractal…or some other whimsical analogy). However, it’s something of an anomaly when one of those “Oh! I should do THIS!” moments spurs me forward to switching ALL my focus and energy to said flight of fancy.
This was one of those times.
But why? What could possibly have captured my attention in such a way that it completely engulfed my imagination?
One word: CROSSOVER.
Now, I’m not talking something as impossibly awesome as the old 1990’s “Cartoon All-Stars” Drug PSA (Garfield, TMNT, Alvin and the Chipmunks AND Looney Tunes? Come on now– that’s a tough act to follow). I’m not even talking about something akin to the Power Rangers revisiting old casts in their season finales.
I’m talking about the “Archie and the Punisher” type of crossover. A crossover where the premise is so strange, and the characters so seemingly unrelated that you just have to know how they weave it into a cohesive storyline.
I’m talking about Dream 9’s One Piece, Toriko, and Dragon Ball Z Collaboration Special!
…Needless to say, I’m probably a bit late to the party where REAL fans of any of these shows are concerned, but for any casual watchers of any of the above shows, or here and there anime viewers, or the general public as a whole, I figured you might have some of the same questions regarding this little romp that I did.
Why these three titles? Why now? Is the crossover any good?
Worry not! I obsessed and research-frenzied for you.
What’s a Dream 9, Anyways?
This “Dream 9” Crossover Special between Toriko, One Piece, and Dragonball, while the first to feature Dragonball, is actually the third in a running series of crossover events between Toriko and One Piece.
So what’s a “Dream 9”? Apparently it was a featherweight mixed martial arts event back in 2009, as well as a John Lennon single. (Thanks, Google!) More importantly for our purposes though is the designation of the title to the 9am to 10am Sunday slot on Japan’s Fuji TV station. This time slot (from what I can glean) is prime real estate, although I can’t be certain if that’s due to the heavy hitting names featured in this hour or if these big names are employed because of the time slot’s popularity (something like America’s ‘saturday morning cartoon’ slots, maybe?)
Either way, Dream 9 is a thing, and three years ago Toriko bumped Dragonball Kai out of the 9am to 9:30am, pre-One-Piece, half-hour spot.
If you’re like me, you’re scratching your head. “Hold on…I’ve heard of One Piece and Dragonball Z-” (of course you have!! Who hasn’t??) “-but what the Gangnam Style is Toriko? …More over, how could some no name anime take DBZ’s spot??”
Even more fascinating is the question: “If Dragon Ball was bumped out of the picture that many years ago…why bring it back now??”
Well the answer is pretty simple actually, but to get the best understanding of whys and hows, it’s a good idea to get a decent feel for the “what”s…namely the series involved themselves!
Next week’s installment: “It’s Not Easy Being Gomu Gomu…” (Dream 9 Collaboration Special Review Part Two) Join us for a review of all three series and the first collaboration special!
