In November of 2009, Stargate and Sanctuary star Amanda Tapping took on a monumental task: to help children around the world receive the care and protection that they deserve.
The goal of Sanctuary for Kids (S4K) is to mobilize scifi fans to use their generous natures to raise money to be distributed to various children’s charity organizations. They raise these funds through online donations and the auctions of items from the Sanctuary set, walk on roles, and Skype chats with cast members. The money is then sent to existing organizations where it has been determined it can make an immediate and tangible difference in the lives of children.
“Sanctuary for Kids has chosen the Nepal Orphans Home andWatari’s TTIP1 and TIPPY Programs in Vancouver as the first charities with which to launch the foundation. In addition, we have sent funds to Haiti through Save the Children Canada.”
The three founders of Sanctuary for Kids, Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler, and Jill Bodie also have also set up events for fans, including charity concerts featuring cast, crew, and friends of the Sanctuary series, and many more. Recently one of their events helped them to collect over $90,500! Such is the generosity of scifi fans!
