Calling all gamers! Have you ever wondered how you can play games and make a difference? Now you can!
Extra Life is an annual video game marathon event that raises money for the 170 members of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Every dollar of your donations will be used to help local kids. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals use these funds to support research and training, purchase equipment and pay for uncompensated care. With your support, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals can continue to save and improve the lives of sick children.
On Saturday, October 15th, you begin gaming at 8:00 a.m. Each participant is asked to raise money by recruiting at least four sponsors to give $1 for each hour of the marathon. You can participate by playing any type of game you want from video games to social networking games and even table top games! If you can’t complete the full 24 hour marathon or if you need to play on a different day, that’s okay.
This is a very special week for the SpaceGypsies. We recently discovered Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out and it was something that really spoke to us. We’re proud to be geeks and we’re proud to be fans. And we’re not afraid to show it!
Geeks have spent far too long being teased and stereotyped. But instead of combating negativity with harsh words, Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out proposes that we invite those that pick on us to “sit at our table and share our interests.”
“Let us combat being used as pawns for internet gaffes with the reasons why we’re awesome, why we love what we love, and why it’s good to be a geek.” -Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out
SpaceGypsies is proud to join Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out this week, September 12th- 16th by posting about the things we geek out for and why we’re proud to be geeks.
Do you want to join the revolution and geek out too? Post your geeky story in our comments section this week and let us know what you geek out for!
A few weeks ago, the bully breed blogs I read were in an uproar over a new app released onto the Android Marketplace by Kage Games, LLC. Originally called “Dog Wars” (aka“KG Dog Fighting”), players breed, raise and train dogs to fight. That’s right, it’s a dog fighting game. Pit Bull advocates, animal shelters and animal welfare groups are up in arms over Google’s seemingly silent “support” of this game. Google not only refuses to comment but also silently refuses to remove this game from their marketplace. Apple recently pulled a baby shaking game from their iPhone marketplace, so why won’t Google do the same in this case? It’s a tricky issue that raises a lot of questions. The issues coming into play are censorship, freedom of speech and good old common sense. When it comes to video games, where do we draw the line?
The 29th Mid South Con was held in Memphis, TN, March 2011 at the shiny (literally) Hilton. This small con has a flare for education along with the fun and charming characters we are all accustom to.
I was only able to spend a day there, but did manage to snag a few Convention goers and staffers for a short video.
Because I’m Steampunk crazy, I spent some time at the Apparition Abolisher fan table. They have that cool Steampunk gun I first saw at Dragon Con! Also, one of their members is a costume designer – Look Here.
I had a brief chat on the go with Les Johnson, reader of Science Fiction and author of the book: Science and Science Fiction. He’s a NASA physicist to boot! Check out his website!
Most intriguing? The Lostgamers. I have to say, had I not had another commitment, I would have joined them. Check out my MidSouth Con 29 video for more on Lostgamers! And other interesting Con participants.
CoastCon 34 – Con of the Living Dead hit Biloxi, MS for the 34th time March 11- 13, 2011. There was an impressive display of pictures from many of the past cons and some great people/staff who are dedicated to this con!
Though the theme was Con of the Living Dead, I’d have to say a good many of the costumes were Steampunk. And of course Storm Troupers, Vader, and some unidentifiable Con goers.
K-9, the Robot was delightfully underfoot all day on Saturday. The small brown lump you can barely see on his back behind his neck is actually a miniature Chewbacca that K-9 wore in the Infamous Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus Mardi-Gras Parade on March 6th in New Orleans.
Every day at CoastCon the Inebriated Lab brew crew could be found wandering around in their lab coats with a drink in hand. This lively bunch are home brewers love SciFi-Fantasy Conventions and the Con parties that are always on hand.
And these guys are more than willing to share their expertise and their brew! Not to mention their new addition of ‘TigerBlood’.
The usual array of gamers were on hand, as well as the D20 Girl Gamers group who the SpaceGypsies originally met at the New Orleans Wizard World Con.
The CoastCon34 had a room dedicated to Larping and Cosplay.
All in all this convention – though small – was entertaining, informative, and lively!
