Speak Out with Your Geek Out!

Hello fellow travelers!

This is a very special week for the SpaceGypsies. We recently discovered Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out and it was something that really spoke to us. We’re proud to be geeks and we’re proud to be fans. And we’re not afraid to show it!

Geeks have spent far too long being teased and stereotyped. But instead of combating negativity with harsh words, Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out proposes that we invite those that pick on us to “sit at our table and share our interests.”

“Let us combat being used as pawns for internet gaffes with the reasons why we’re awesome, why we love what we love, and why it’s good to be a geek.” -Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out

SpaceGypsies is proud to join Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out this week, September 12th- 16th by posting about the things we geek out for and why we’re proud to be geeks.

Do you want to join the revolution and geek out too? Post your geeky story in our comments section this week and let us know what you geek out for!

Never be afraid to let your geek flag fly!

America’s Got Talent Interested In Dragon*Con Favorites!

Atlanta Is Focus of AGT This Weekend

Extraordinary Contraptions Invited to Audition

AGT Scopes out Puckin’ Fuppet Show

Dateline: Atlanta, GA — America’s Got Talent (AGT) is getting ready for another exciting round of competition on NBC. This Saturday, January 29, 2011, the producers from AGT will be auditioning prospective acts at Atlanta’s famed America’s Mart as well as local performing venues.  Many talented acts will try out, along with a number of delusional performers with no self awareness. I will admit I normally watch for the ones without talent.  But not this year.

Yes,  Hasselhoff is gone, but the show will still have some interest for geeks.  The Atlanta fan-based community needs to keep an eye on two  AGT  events that are tied to fandoms because they involve Dragon*Con Acts:  The Extraordinary Contraptions and The Sci-Fi Janitors.  Okay, The Sci-Fi Janitors aren’t exactly included, but The Puckin’ Fuppet Show is like Bob and Carl’s cousin. So…close enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Steampunk Fans! Abney Park Needs Your Help!

Calling all Steampunk fans!!! Abney Park, one of the best Steampunk bands out there, needs your help!

Last night fans received this message from our beloved Captain Robert:

“Two years ago, we were putting the finishing touches on our album Aether Shanties, and our studio computer had a melt down. I came into the studio and found a blue screen of death waiting for me. Because of this crash we lost countless amazing recordings and performances, and I had to spend hundreds of dollars on bringing the guest musicians back to re-record their parts, etc. We basically had to rerecord the album again from scratch.

Since we are but poor wandering musicians, we basically patched that computer back together with some duck tape, and an old piece of chewing gum we found stuck to the bottom of one of Nathaniel’s boots.

It held together, sort of…until just before our latest album, The End of Days, was done. The computer started showing errors again, slowing down, rebooting took several attempts…and it finally crashes again! But this time, it crashed just AFTER I sent it to the mastering producer- after we were done.

So I’ve started writing the next album, and the computer is crashing AGAIN. All day, every day. So we’ve got to do something!”

This is where you, the fans come in! Abney Park is having a ONE WEEK sale to raise money for a new studio computer. What are they offering?

  • For every purchase made from January 10th until January 16th, Captain Robert will send you a coupon for one free album download!

  • Captain Robert and Kristina will autograph every CD sold this week at no additional charge! Autographed CDs usually sell for $30 or more from their site. It’s an amazing opportunity to get a full set of Abney Park autographed CDs!

What if you have all the Abney Park stuff you could ever want? Well my friend, you can still help out by making a donation HERE.

If you want to see Abney Park live check out their upcoming shows: Voyages Extraordinaires, February 12th in San Diego, California and  Wild West Con, March 4th to 6th in Tucson, Arizona! If you haven’t seen Abney Park live you don’t know what a fantastic show you’re missing!

Pogo Breaks New Grounds

Using sounds from popular movies and mixing them into mesmerizing tracks, Pogo has broken new ground in the music world.

When we describe Pogo as using sounds to compose music we mean he uses sounds at their most basic levels and mixes them together to create songs that are 100% unique. He breaks apart words, melting syllabels from multiple words together and creates new words and sounds. He even pieces together environmental noises to create emphasis to convey ideas and emotions. Merging all of these new sounds together as instruments, Pogo creates masterpieces of pure fancy that are pleasant to the ear and always, inevitably, get stuck in your head.

Pogo's new official logo, the Space Bunny!

He’s been an internet phenomena for years now but very few people have heard of him. His popularity seems to travel via word of mouth. In fact, that’s how we heard about him!

Composing and creating songs for films such as Toy Story, Gone with the Wind, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,  and even Terminator 2, Pogo takes the feel of the movie and translates it into an audio masterpiece. You feel the desperation, hope, struggle and overall badassness of Terminator 2 in Pogo’s piece Skynet Symphonic and you feel the magical wonder in what is being called his most sophisticated piece yet, Mary’s Garden from the children’s classic, A Secret Garden.

What has gotten Pogo the most acclaim lately is his take on the Disney/Pixar masterpiece Up! titled Upular. Disney/Pixar was impressed enough with his work that Pixar posted Pogo’s Upular on their YouTube channel! Head on over to YouTube and check it out. We guarantee you’ll be humming it for the rest of the day.
