Speak Out with Your Geek Out!

Hello fellow travelers!

This is a very special week for the SpaceGypsies. We recently discovered Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out and it was something that really spoke to us. We’re proud to be geeks and we’re proud to be fans. And we’re not afraid to show it!

Geeks have spent far too long being teased and stereotyped. But instead of combating negativity with harsh words, Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out proposes that we invite those that pick on us to “sit at our table and share our interests.”

“Let us combat being used as pawns for internet gaffes with the reasons why we’re awesome, why we love what we love, and why it’s good to be a geek.” -Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out

SpaceGypsies is proud to join Operation Speak Out with your Geek Out this week, September 12th- 16th by posting about the things we geek out for and why we’re proud to be geeks.

Do you want to join the revolution and geek out too? Post your geeky story in our comments section this week and let us know what you geek out for!

Never be afraid to let your geek flag fly!

Jim Martin: Puppeteer Extraordinare!

Jim Martin’s career was inspired by Planet of the Apes. He wanted to be a makeup artist. Too bad puppets don’t need makeup, right?

Jim Martin has been an actor, writer, director, and even producer for some of the greatest puppet shows of the last three decades, along with numerous Muppet movies. In his talk at C2E2 here in Chicago, Jim gave us a walk through of his long career in puppetry, complete with pictures.

I learned many things about puppetry that I never knew. You would almost expect the people behind sock puppets or marionettes to provide the voices for their characters. But what about when the puppet is almost half your height, it sits on your shoulders? Believe it or not, the pupeteers still did the voices, and Jim Martin was one such dual puppeteer. He told us many stories, giving us examples of that the characters sounded like. Most memorably he told us about how Gary Gnu of The Great Space Coaster went from a very Walter Cronkite like newscaster to a character comparable to Jim Cramer. The director wanted Gary to have a more animated voice, and as Jim got more and more annoyed with the demanding director, they eventually landed on the right tone!

In Once Apon a Tree, Jim played Forest Stump, a gumpy beaver. Believe it or not the voice of Forest was inspired by Wallace Shawn! Jim overheard Wallace on the phone having a little argument with his agent. On his way out, Wallace chose to share his frustration was a total stranger, Jim! The rest is history!

Just like the lives of Hollywood actors, Jim’s career wasn’t without drama, even though the puppets didn’t have agents, trailers, or egos to deal with. DJ Kat was known for saying “What a horrible time in my life!” DJ’s show was a show in conflict. DJ was rude and mean with a sense of humor intended to entertain adults, but it was still a kids show. Jim said, “DJ was the black part of me”. Jim was always fighting with Sky Channel and the studio to make it either a kids show or an adult show, rather than a mix. Ultimately Jim’s contract ran out and the show faded away into TV history.

In recent years, Jim has been traveling. He even gave a puppetry clinic to children in Indonesia! It was a real treat when Jim had us put our right hand in the air, tuck our thumbs into our upper palms, and then fold our fingers down. Then he taught us how a puppeteer uses their thumb rather than their fingers to open and close the mouth of a puppet, and moving as if to throw the words from your hand. It never really occurred to me until that day, but if you take notice of how the puppets speak, particularly characters of Jim Henson’s creation, you will notice this distinctive method in action.

Jim has been touring and speaking at events in conjunction with Toonseum! Check out their website to see if they will be coming to your area!

Puckin’ Fuppet Show Returns! Part of Growing Puppet Slam Movement

Beau Brown's Beavers In Space - Dam Funny Puppetry

Atlanta, March 11, 2011 – Beau Brown, one of the nations rising masters of puppetry, presented another of his The Puckin’ Fuppet Shows at the Basement Theater in Atlanta to a packed house.  The Puckin’ Fuppet Show is a monthly “puppet slam,” that Brown describes as  a “release valve for puppeteers who spend their days at libraries doing Winnie The Pooh“.  Not that there is anything wrong with children’s puppetry…it’s just kind of safe.

The Puckin’ Fuppet Show is far from safe.  To begin with…say the title three times without making it an obscenity. Moreover, the acts are not safe.

The first act on the stage were puppet cell phones trapped in a junk drawer.  Performed by John Craven and Chip Boyes, the act compared the junk draw to a prison, and ended with the innocent new phone getting an older phone’s antenna in his microSD slot.  Cellphone-prision-rape is always good for a laugh.  The best line in this set was “And you consider yourself a smart phone!” This was not safe at all, but it was comprehensible. And quite hilarious.

Obama and Palin Puppets

One danger of puppet slams, for the audience at least, is that this is not the same as open mike stand up comedy.  No matter how bad a comedian is…he is attempting comedy.  At puppet slams, there are always puppeteers who consider themselves artists.  And this was true with two of the acts.

The performance  by the ensemble Ex Somnium involved sheets, masks, lights, and a metal bowl played as a musical instrument.  It was not coherent enough to even describe properly, though “community college theater production of Miyazaki’s Spirited Away” comes close, if the community college is Greendale, from the TV show “Community.”

Another act, by the group White Sheet Ensemble, imitated Electric Company’s classic routine of “So”  plus “ck” equals “Sock.”  Except that one combination that they used was “Fu” and…good night everyone!  No seriously..it started with obscenities and went to racial epitaphs.  The pacing was excruciating and one viewer remarked the group should watch Robot Chicken to learn about timing and how long a bit should go on. Extraordinary Contraptions Invited to Audition

AGT Scopes out Puckin’ Fuppet Show

Dateline: Atlanta, GA — America’s Got Talent (AGT) is getting ready for another exciting round of competition on NBC. This Saturday, January 29, 2011, the producers from AGT will be auditioning prospective acts at Atlanta’s famed America’s Mart as well as local performing venues.  Many talented acts will try out, along with a number of delusional performers with no self awareness. I will admit I normally watch for the ones without talent.  But not this year.

Yes,  Hasselhoff is gone, but the show will still have some interest for geeks.  The Atlanta fan-based community needs to keep an eye on two  AGT  events that are tied to fandoms because they involve Dragon*Con Acts:  The Extraordinary Contraptions and The Sci-Fi Janitors.  Okay, The Sci-Fi Janitors aren’t exactly included, but The Puckin’ Fuppet Show is like Bob and Carl’s cousin. So…close enough. Read the rest of this entry »
